The regular guitar is quite an instrument. It has many flavours, tones and techniques to master and its going to be quite a journey to set off on. Even the basics are going to take a while to learn but it will be a very worthwhile experience indeed.
You should also be aware that your music taste may well change throughout your progress. You will here things that you have never heard before in a song that you think is good. Before you know it, you will go work it out and find you like it so much you’ll listen to more of this particular artists work. You’ll discover this particular person had influences they learnt from so you’ll go and give them a listen too. And on and on it goes.
So, to get started, you’re going to need to get to know some open chords and where some important notes are along the neck of the guitar. These will come in handy later on and I can give you a hint that most of them are where the dots are on the fretboard. If you learn what notes are on the uppermost two strings on the dots from 1 to 12, that’s a good start for a beginner.
Be open to all forms of music or at least be aware there are many different styles out there. Believe it or not, heavy metal, thrash metal and all that kind of stuff has its roots in blues. It may not sound like it and you’ve probably never even listened to blues guitar but after a while you’ll realize that many styles have the same origins.
Examine other types of music and guitar styles out there too. You will typically find that your current hero is only a fraction of the player his hero is. Brian May is a great guitarist but I am sure he wouldn’t mind me saying he’s not a patch on Steve Vai’s virtuoso technique.
Take your time at the outset. Have a system of practice in place and don’t try and learn everything in day. Its going to take time and a few sore fingers. It will be a journey you may even find new things about yourself. After all, you are opening yourself up to new experiences.
Once you have a knowledge and ability to play the basic chords reasonably well, you’ll be able to play most songs out there without even practicing them. Don’t tell anyone but most songs these days use only 3 or 4 chords. Also, most of the chords used like bar chords, are the same shape but in different places up the neck.

So what is the best way to learn acoustic guitar? There are some general rules or advice we can follow but ultimately the journey is slightly different for every guitar player. We all have our own limitations and strengths. The thing is that you never know what they will be until you begin! Let’s start by looking at some of the most important points to consider…
A common first mistake many beginners can make is to neglect taking a very close look at the guitar they are trying to learn on. It’s a fact that a badly set up guitar can make learning so much more difficult than it need be and actually be the real reason behind numerous failures.
The easiest way to check that your acoustic guitar is correctly set up is to take it to someone who can examine it for you and make any necessary adjustments. You should ask them in particular to check the action and the intonation. The action of your guitar is how high the strings are set off the fretboard and the intonation will affect how well the guitar will tune.
I would consider those two things are absolutely fundamental when it comes to finding success when learning acoustic guitar.
Too many students fail not because they do not have the sufficient ability required to master guitar but rather it is a simple case of trying to learn on a guitar which is badly set up in the first place. You’ve been warned!
However much or little talent you may have you will have to commit yourself to a consistent practice schedule and preferably this should be on a daily basis. You do not have to practice for long periods of time each day, in fact it is often enough to do 20 or 30 minutes worth.
Guitar methods will normally cover basic things such as chords, tuning and scales when you begin. It’s actually not difficult to remember these things and if you keep to your practicing on a daily basis you’ll find that your progress will actually be quite swift.
There will be times when you’ll no doubt feel like giving up. You may even be telling yourself that you have no talent for music at all. If you want to succeed and learn acoustic guitar to a fluent level then you must persevere and see it through. Just do your practice and forget it. Everything will happen in its own good time.
The article was submitted by a professional guitar teacher. His site will show you how to learn acoustic guitar to a high standard. You’ll also find a great deal of of absolutely free guitar lessons for beginners just for dropping by!

When you are playing the guitar, even if you are a professional, the most important aspect of playing, comes from the tone that you have on your guitar. You could become very obsessed by this fact and trying to find the right tone, is so important to having good playing skills. Understanding this about your playing, will encourage you to obtain the right tone with practice.
It might be something which will come in time, but so many guitar players think that all they have to do is plug into their system and they are on their way to playing just like the most popular guitar players. This of course is so far from the truth and anything that they may add to their equipment, will not bring the satisfaction that they want to achieve either. They can spend huge amounts of money on pickups and think that these changes will do the trick, when in fact, it won’t help the tone at all. There are some which will improve the sound in the drives, especially with the lows and the high sounds, but will not completely do everything.
Buying the most expensive amplifiers that you can find will not bring the satisfaction that you desire to have either, as yes they will improve the sound somewhat, but in the end you will be disappointed that the tone you are looking for, is not achieved as yet. The best equipment will help in fine tuning your sound and bring out your own individual creative skills, but ultimately, the quality of your playing, will not be that much improved, to warrant spending all that money on the bigger “better” equipment, unless you just want to have it anyway. It will not work the miracles that you are looking for. You still will not sound like you are a professional, who has practiced for many, many years to accomplish that rare sound.
Your abilities when it comes to playing good guitar, just depends on the fact that you will have to concentrate on your skills as a guitar player and this takes time and endurance on your part. When you are listening to the great guitar players, when they sound so good, that is because they are good. If you could talk to them personally, you would probably find that they have been playing and practicing for more years than you have been on this earth to begin with. You must be patient with yourself and give the time and energy that is needed to get anywhere with your guitar.
In time, you will be able to develop your own skills as you climb the ladder to successful guitar playing. No matter what expensive equipment you can buy for yourself, there is no short-cut to actually taking the time to just playing and do not forget, that while this is happening, you need to really like that practice time, or you will give up and not want to do anything about improving your skills any more.

There probably would be one in a million, who could actually pick up a guitar and start to play without even thinking about it, but this is a very rare individual, with a gift that doesn’t come along very often. If you are one of these people, consider yourself very fortunate. The rest of us have to take the time and more time and more practicing, before we can get to the point where our skill and the speed which we desire to have, comes without thinking about it too much.
We will need such helps as metronomes and knowledge which can be practically applied to our everyday practicing. Many young guitar players, when they first start and have a guitar in their hands, dream of the time that they too will be able to have their fingers flying across the fretboard, with the speed of lightning. This kind of playing will indeed blow the speakers and the ears of the people, who happen to be listening, as they think that the louder the better.
To be a speedy player on the guitar, you will develop fingers which bleed at some point, more dedication to the craft than you are capable of right now, the patience to overcome all the obstacles which might come in your way and lots of hard work, repeated over and over again. Speed does not come overnight, so don’t get discouraged, in time it will happen for you.
There is so much to learn, before you become a virtuoso on the guitar, and the time it takes to learn all these things, takes effort and endurance on your part. In time you will develop that trained ear, that you so want to have, with the skills and the speed that will come along for you too. Your rhythm will improve and everything else will also, but be very patient with yourself and don’t give up too soon.
Backing tracks will help you on your journey to play a better guitar. The tempo that will help you to improve your speed, will be applied so that it will also make it so much more fun for your practice time. Bringing to perfection, these skills, will happen with these tracks, by hearing the background with the professional backup that you need and you will find that you won’t get so bored with the practice times, compared to doing it all by yourself.
When you have mastered the scales and your own techniques, then you need to use a metronome, set it at the speed and tempo which is comfortable for you and then you will find that it improves your speed tremendously. Your accuracy will definitely improve with using the metronome, and you will find that your skills, will so readily all come together for you. Just playing fast, will not mean that you have achieved anything, if the notes are all wrong.

Naturally when any individual that is playing the guitar wants to be able to really master all of the different aspects of learning and playing the guitar, the ideal solution is to play as many live bands as you can. Not only does this help the butting guitarist to learn how to play the instrument but it also teaches him how to handle the different pressures that comes in the entertainment world.
You need to master people skills and it is far different when playing in front of a live audience then for one playing in there garage with a bunch of buddies.
Sometimes however, the individual playing the guitar does not want to be a soloist and doesn’t have anybody to associate with to be able to get together and play or to put even an amateur group together.
Also one of the other problems is that many times with a group they all have different points of factors. Some of them want to be involved more then others and when this happens then it can become quite diversified in the group and quite often this is why many of the groups end up breaking up.
Quite often if this is the case there is one very special technique or opportunity that the learning guitarist can take advantage of and that?s using tracks that provide background music that the guitarist can take the lead position with this is an excellent training tool and is also advisable to use even after one becomes quite good at there playing it helps to keep the skills up to the level where they should be because its allowing the guitarist to concentrate on his music without having to focus on the audience.
This is another way of being able to utilize time constringes as well one of the problems of working with a group is that not everybody has the same time available and this means that there is no restrictions if the back tracking for the guitar is used. It is something that can be utilized at anytime that the guitarist wants to practice. Another benefit about it as well is that it gives him the choice of being able to choose the type of music that he wants to play with it also gives him the variety where as perhaps the group or band that he belongs with wants to concentrate on one type of music the guitarist can choose the various back tracking songs to become more diversified.
Back tracking music can also be utilized in the group as well or even with another player. Ideally what the guitarist should do is build up a good size collection of the back tracking music this way he can switch from the different variation and learn to master all areas of the music instead of concentrating in one specific area. It?s also ideal when a guitarist has a weakness and really needs to concentrate on certain areas.

You might find these tips quite useful. When you start to play scales, as a novice player, the sound might not be so nice to the ears. Thousands of variations can make all kinds of sound and some of them, not so pretty. If you’ve ever heard nails running along a chalkboard, sometimes it sounds like that, especially when you don’t have any idea as to what you are doing.
There is always the fact that you’re not sure which finger to use, or if it’s the right way to play it. When you are reading some of your favourite professional guitar magazines, they list so many of the major and the minor scales. Some will go on to talk about the exotic scale, which you have been associated with Continuing on this confusing note, some of these guitarists might only use a select few scales, to achieve their sound. Now what?
Let’s get to the basics. Scales can be less confusing than we think. There might be a few scales, which are more familiar than the rest of them, so that’s a bonus. Sometimes these anxious thoughts that you feel, considering these scales can be alleviated, by knowing how to use the right fingers, so this can make it easier for you. Fingering the scales correctly, will take all the negative feelings away, once and for all.
Proper fingering makes the most of the available space upon the fret board. There are four fingers on the fretting hand, which are numbered. Each of these fingers, they responsible for a definite area on the fret board and we will look at these, to see which fingers represent which numbers.
#1, is the index finger, #2, is the middle finger, #3, is the ring finger, #4, is the pinkie finger, #5, is the thumb. You might see many of these numbers of these scales that professionals use and if, you see one of these numbers, or a tab, then it indicates exactly which finger to use, in order to play that specific note.
A certain pattern will emerge for the fingers, when the scales are being played. For example: The fingers go around certain frets, when playing in different patterns.
A minor pentatonic- This is your 1st, 3rd and 4th fingers, the 4th takes the most stretching. whereas the 1st and 3rd, are for the shorter ones. You will get faster and better with practice.
A question people come to, is when it’s your favorite type of music, what scale should you use? Below is a list;
Major scale-This is in the modern music, so you will want to know this one. The forms in the major scale, are either movable or stationery, but you should learn all the major scales, as it will be a wonderful reference tool.
G Major-Memorize fingerings. You will be able to produce the major scales with this pattern. Practice, and you will get faster.
Pentatonic-Popular with blues and rock guitarists
C Pentatonic Major-the blues scale-similar to the pentatonic, but has some twists, recommended for all types of music.

Do you want the audience to be wowed by your guitar playing? The tone of your guitar has so much to do with it, and there are a few good hints which will help you to improve in this area. It is very important to have a professional sound to your playing, so this will take some work and also some more practice, but you can do it.
Sometimes there could be some distortion when you are playing and that will cause a sound which is grating on the ears, a buzzing noise, when your notes will have a thinner sound. To improve this part, you need to have the pedals doing the effects, rather than the amplifier being set higher. This change will dramatically change the tone and get rid of the buzzing right away. There is a tube amplifier which will help immensely too, which will cut down on the offending sound and will replace it with a much warmer tone, so the audience will be enjoying it much more, and so will you.
You need to develop your skills and techniques through using your fingers to their utmost ability. Even if you have very inadequate equipment, you can have a very good sound, depending on how your fingers are playing the notes. A professional player can get away with this, as they know what they are doing, but the opposite can be true also, when an amateur is playing on an expensive set of instruments, it will sound like they are amateurish, so the fingertips control the tone so much as you are playing.
Backing tracks are an amazing help, when coming to the practice time. You will need to purchase some, when you are wanting to improve your techniques, as far as the improvisational aspect of your playing is concerned. You will be able to create your own personal playing style, so this is a great benefit to your guitar playing. The tone which you deveop, will be your very own natural tone and you won’t be so intimidated, when you go before a live audience.
There is another benefit to using the backing tracks. When you have not got access to a live back-up band, when you are going to perform in front of the live audience, the backing track may be used to replace them. You will be familiar with it and it will give you the confidence that you need, especially if this is your debut. These tracks are recorded by musicians who have been in the business for a long time and they know what they are doing, so it will have a very professional sound. It might encourage others to get their own backing track too, when they want to practice with their guitar.
Your ear will improve so much and you can develop the skills that you yearn for, in your playing. Your tone will improve so much, that you will definitely be asked back for a repeat performance before you know it. The main thing when performing before those people, is that you enjoy yourself and this will transfer over to your playing.

Many individuals will spend a lot of hours practicing on how to play the guitar and become quite frustrated. They are under the impression that there is some secret to learning how to play spectacular solos. Most often a serious guitar player will spend many hours searching for ways to improve there performance. They will read a ton of articles and tips and techniques and do their best to apply this during their practice sessions. One great way is to use guitar backing tracks.
Any individual that wants to learn how to play guitar and particularly be a soloist must depend on the backing tracks when first starting out. What this allows the individual player to do serves many purposes.
Every individual that is playing an instrument at some point in time wants to be able to play with others. This is true also with individuals that play guitars even if they want to be a soloist. They have the option that way of being able to play on there own or in a group.
This is where the benefits of the guitar backing tracks are so valuable.
The individual using the backing tracks can start off by using the slower melodies to get there skills to perfection. What these tracks do is provide back ground music that the guitarist will play along to. What it helps to do is teach the player to be able to blend their music in with what the rest of the group is playing. This is critically important when the individual decides to play with a rock group for example or another band. This makes the practice much more efficient because the guitarist has to concentrate on different areas of the music.
He not only has to determine what he is playing but how it is working with the rest of the group. The solo guitar player will have the opportunity then to put his solo in any part of the backing track that he feels fits best. This gives him the opportunity to learn how to work with placing solo pieces within a band. It is a good practice to put solos in different areas and then start to make judgment calls as to where they sounded best.
The more that backing tracks are used the better the skills of the guitarist will be. As he becomes better at playing then he can increase the speed of the backing tracks to picking music that is working on a faster beat. Also by choosing different types of music such as country and rock for example he will soon be able to play all types.
By applying all of the techniques combined with practice one can soon master the skills of guitar playing.

Any individual that wants to become the lead guitarist in any band it means learning a lot of the advanced techniques this includes learning how to bend the strings properly and do some specialized picking which is called tremolo.
Sometimes you will hear a reference to a whammy bar. This refers to an instrument that is used for a piece of equipment that helps with some of the techniques that are used by a lead guitarist. It will bring out different tunes and is quite often used in the heavy metal type bands this will also include techniques such as the slides.
Many individuals when they start playing guitar, want to do is learn how to do the slide techniques. This is because it gives a totally different sound to what the normal guitar playing does. There are different types of slides that can be created and there also abundance of materials that can be used to create these sounds.
One of the things that has to be done is the strings have to be raised and in order to keep them in this position then it requires the use of a special extension otherwise they just go back to the position that they were originally in some individuals don?t even bother using a specific piece of equipment to do the slides they will use there hand on its own. This will create a different sound just like any of the other items that are utilized to do this.
Once you have mastered how to do the slides when it comes to your lead guitar playing the next thing you?re going to want to focus on is how to bend the strings to get a different pitch sound. This is the technique that cuts the amateur from the professional this is what allows the lead guitarist to put his all into his playing this is where his feelings and how he wants his music to come across as a individual player. In order to do this the strings have to be moved in a specific direction and this is referring to the particular string that is being in a down position at the time.
It is always parallel to the finger board what is often done here is that this technique of bending the strings is used in combination with other types of techniques that are geared towards some sort of distortion or alteration to the sound there will be several different combo tones that can be even up to three in combination and this is quite popular and noted in some of the mastered guitar players known as the professionals.
When it comes to picking again you are looking at a third and very unique technique that is the responsibility of the lead guitar player. Really all it comes down to is knowing how to play one note and playing it really fast this is tremolo. Some of the pros will refer to it as double picking it really is part of putting a melody to the tunes.

Every individual that is learning how to play the guitar will do so by different methods and techniques. Everyone has there own way of learning although there are some basics that everyone must follow.
There are some people that do well by learning how to read music which is called sheet music and then there are some that do really well by learning just by listening to the music being played. This is what?s called playing by ear. Many individuals feel that there not capable learning this way but that may not be the case.
It?s important to be able to train your ear to be able to hear the music properly. Otherwise you can?t judge whether you are doing the proper things when it comes to your playing. It?s something that you must learn to be able to know what cords and which of the scales are being played in the music and that they are being played correctly this is what you?re going to be able compare your playing to.
Before even getting to this point this is where you need to have the beginnings of the learning how to play a guitar.
Everyone must start at the beginning so they can understand what they are learning and doing and what they need to look for. All of the basics put together with the learning to play by ear are what is going to lead the guitar student to the point at being good at what he is doing.
Just because you are learning how to play the guitar by ear doesn?t mean that you don?t have to apply the same work to it as you do with the other part of your theory learning and practice. It?s going to take a great deal of time to train yourself to be able to make the decisions when you are listening to the music being played. It is a time consuming act that many guitarists will give up on because they feel they just cannot master it.
This is the time when you need to take a deep breath and take a bit of a break and then go back at it. Just simply by listening to your favourite guitar tunes without involving them in practice will help as well. Learning to concentrate on the music is something that you will be able to apply when you go to play yourself.
In the past you have probably not put that much concentration on the cords that are being played or where the solos are fitting in. however now that you are applying this to your guitar learning it is something you will start to do.
What you should do to get the best from learning how to play by ear is to pick out three or four of your favourite cd?s of music then what you want to do is first learn how to play these particular songs. After that you can then compare your playing especially if you tape it and compare it to the cd.

The magic ingredient to becoming a lead guitarist is the guitar scale. You will need to get familiar with guitar scales to the point you can play them anywhere on the guitar moving from one note to the next quickly.
We will start our journey by looking into the four basic guitar scales that you will need to master, they are the major, minor, major pentatonic and minor pentatonic. After looking at each guitar scale you will be given a practice routine and by the end of this guitar lesson you will be ready to kick out the jams with Tom Morello!
To improve your speed and overall ability you should use the alternate picking method when practicing guitar scales. It is very easy to achieve, pick the string downward for the first note, then upward for the next continue to alternate as you play.
The only other tool I would recommend besides a good pick is a metronome or backing track where you can set the tempo. You will want to practice these guitar scales at very slow tempos to begin with.
Major Scales
We will start off by examining the Major Scale. This guitar scale starts from any root note, you only need to remember the pattern of the scale to work out what notes are in it. Let’s take a look at the C Major Scale as an example:
C to D : tone
D to E : tone
E to F : semi-tone
F to G : tone
G to A : tone
A to B : tone
B to C : semi-tone
There’s a C major exercise for you to try at our website, completely free of course, just look for the Learn Guitar Scales section.
Minor Scale on Guitar
Minor scales are found from the 6th note in the key you are playing in, so if we are playing a song in the key of C our relative minor scale will be A Minor. Here is how the Minor scale is constructed:
A to B : tone
B to C : semi-tone
C to D : tone
D to E : tone
E to F : semi-tone
F to G : tone
G to A : semi-tone
Your A Minor Homework can be accessed at any time from my website, for free.
Major Pentatonic Scales
The pentatonic versions of the Major and Minor scales contain five notes each. You will use them a lot when scratching out new ideas or learning to improvise over a new song. The Major Pentatonic scale is built up from the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th notes from the Major Scale. Therefore our C Major Pentatonic Scale will have the notes of C – D – E – G – A.
Here’s a simple exercise you can play to learn the Major Pentatonic Scale.
The Minor Pentatonic Scale
Another scale with just 5 notes and possibly the most widely used scale in lead guitar parts, you will find this everywhere. First find out what key the song is in, if it is in something like C Major we know how to get to A Minor, now we cherry pick the 5 notes using the method for the Major Pentatonic scale and get A, C, D, E, and G.
Your homework assignment for the A Minor scale is something which will get you onto the road of becoming a lead guitarist. I want you to first find a YouTube video for Eric Clapton’s incredibly famous song “Layla”. Listen to it the whole way through 3-5 times first.
Now, you are going to play the D Minor Pentatonic scale over the solo and the chorus, just fiddle around with different notes and different structures, the solo itself is based around the scale and you can practice playing it in time with the music, here it is here:
Mastering lead guitar is something that all guitarists should undertake, Adam Summers provides more information so you can learn how to play guitar as quickly as possible. Check out the extra resources under Lead Guitar so you can learn guitar scales fast.
