“More than Words” is a very popular tune by Extreme. This interesting band came together in the late 1980’s, founded by Gary Cherone as well as Nuno Bettencourt. Since then, the band has had a variety of members rotate through. Like many other bands, they have also had volatile periods in getting along with early.
Their early popularity in the 80’s and into the early 90’s made them a common name. The band cites influences from early metal band, such as Van Halen and Queen. Other bands that have similar musical qualities include Drama Gods, Morning Widows, Satellite Party, Tribe of Judah and Twisted Sister. There are multiple similarities in these bands.
They have sold a lot of albums. They made basically five important albums. And then a couple of EPs that are sold only in Japan and a few little compilations and some of that other stuff. In the early 90s, they sold over 10 million albums. So, that is pretty huge. Their biggest selling album was, of course, their second album, “Pornograffitti”, that of course, had the song that just played on there, “More Than Words”, which we’ll talk a little bit more about that song a little bit later. It sold a lot of albums for them even though it really wasn’t very representative of their work. Because there is nothing funky or metal about this kind of bossa nova, percussive tune “More Than Words”. But it does fall in the category of the metal ballad or well, acoustic ballad that is really popular. There are tons of songs just like that that people love because they’re approachable and accessible and really part of the mainstream. Even though, they’re quite different than the rest of the sound of the band. But anyway, that album is pretty cool.
Many of the members from Extreme came from Malden, MA. During the late 80’s a band called Dream had split, and some of these members came together with Nuno Bettencourt, who had been part of a band named Sinful. Pat Badger from In the pin became the bass player. This group of players began working together, and their relationship grew until they started arguing at small things. Eventually they named their band Dream, which changed to Ex-Dream. Ultimately, the permanent name was changed to Extreme. One of their biggest hits came from the infamous movie, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, even though the real claim to fame for this group is the song More Than Words. This song, which is known for the guitar as well as the percussive guitar playing Nuno is known for. This method is difficult to master, but is a great way to teach method. The best way to do this, but still difficult, is to break it down to specific methods.
The song reached the Billboard’s Top 100 during 1991, as soon as it was recorded. IT became a huge hit, and continues today to be popular on different Medias such as YouTube. There are many versions of this video, including the promotional one. At the beginning, you see dials getting turned down from amplifiers. The bass player and drummer pack up get and have a seat on the couch. Ultimately, it focuses on Gary and Nuno simply playing. The others are sitting on the couches, reading a newspaper, while holding up lighters symbolizing giving the song the attention it deserves.
Extreme enjoyed moderate success for several years, until about 1993. Their popularity then got a little scattered. They brought new members into the band in the years of 1994-1996 to try to inject new life. Ultimately, the band split up and began their own pursuits. Since they have split up, they have put two more albums out, during 2008 and 2010. The first of these was named “Extreme”, and the second “Extreme II: Pornographitti”.
I saw these guys on an episode of VH1’s Classic on VH1 classic, the “Metal Mania” show, where they were appropriately praised and deified by the hosts. Also watched a few videos of Nuno, trying to give a guitar lesson on his song “More Than Words”. He was a little reticent to do it to say the least. It wasn’t really his cup of tea. But he at least allowed the cameras to take close ups of his hands as he was doing this. But something about what he felt like was …it really seemed like he felt that the information he had about the guitar was kind of proprietary and he didn’t want you to know how it went.
There are some people who aren’t eager or interested in sharing their knowledge when teaching the guitar. This can be upsetting for some students, since there is an abundance of information and creativity to pass around.
Extreme has a new album being released this May, 2010, that was recorded in Boston. Many of the big hits, such as “More Than Words”, “Comfortably Dumb” and Decadence Dance” are included on this new album.
There are other songs, such as “Rest in Peace”, “Star”, ” It’s a monster” and “Midnight Express”. Other songs contributing to the comeback are songs taken from the Nikolai Korsakov “War and Peace” called Flight of the Bumblebee.
This band is making a recent comeback. There is a new DVD release that includes a lot of interesting material by the band, but let’s go to the song “More Than Words”. This song is a standard Howard ballad. The band White Snake released multiple songs that resembled this song, with the popular and powerful screaming ballad. This movement was a popular movement in the “Hair Band” movement during the 80’s.
“More Than Words” is a song addressing the person to show love through more than only words, but the appeal was universal. Even Weird Al Yankovic created a parody of this song with “you Don’t Love Me Anymore”. Amateur bands created spinoffs as well; the “amateur transplants” used a similar tune called “Northern Birds” from the 2006 album We Are so Bad.
This song also became a parody during an episode of “How I Met Your Mother”. with Jason Seagull. This eventually became a number one hit in the US, and the second largest in the UK. This put the band back on the map, with more people who knew that genre of music.
Many bands created their own version of this song. Some of the band in addition to the above mentioned Amateur Transplants included West Life, D.B. Mac and David Cassidy. This is someone who has had an up and down career, but during 2003 he released “A Touch of Blue”, and now many know him from his work with the Partridge Family. He was known for having a struggle with his identity, trying to find out if he was Keith Partridge, a TV rock singer, or did he want to be the real deal David Cassidy performing rock and roll guitar?
It’s hard to differentiate who his genuine character is. He is the son of Jack Cassidy, and the stepson to Shirley McClain, who knew him on the set with the Partridge Family as well. His dad had an action history, going back to multiple shows, such as Colombo episodes and a mystery movie series.
Peter Falk, Jack Cassidy, Colombo, Dick Van Dyke – all famous villains – were tied to David Cassidy. Because he covered “More Than Words” it becomes part of the story. A few last thoughts on this song are that the drippy sentiment in this song is considered a weak attempt to duplicate great writes, such as Cole Porter or Gershwin. It’s adolescent, and somewhat juvenile ramblings much like John Meyers.
But, the band still is trying to make a living happening. Actually, they are making very good livings because Nuno Bettencourt again, is really a phenomenal guitar player and he is just been sort of pigeon holding to this style, this funky metal style. But we can always hope that they will be doing a little bit more stuff like this because frankly I love the song “More Than Words” and it is really worth having all my students work on it. So, they can come up with a little bit more stuff like that. Also, then we would have a lot more Extreme available as instructional stuff for folks.
Most of this stuff can be found throughout the internet. There is one more element – parody. One YouTube video worth checking out shows two guys and plays on what they were really thinking about or talking about during the video. This is not the actual band, but it’s a great video edit.
If you have the chance to find “More than Words”, it is a good investment to use as instruction for the guitar, as well as the entertainment value. Any music by extreme is a great thing to invest in, including the song “More Than Words”.

Learning to play the guitar takes commitment and persistence, but it is an achievable skill by anyone willing to take the time and try. Here are some things that can help when learning to play the guitar.
1. Invest a little – Using the best instrument possible to learn how to play can be a big help in the learning process. As with most activities having the right equipment makes a world of difference in the final outcome, and also makes things much easier.
For this reason, it is important to invest and buy a good, not necessarily the best, guitar. This is because good guitars have better strings that will trigger quality play and better sound. Good guitars provide comfort to those who have not yet experienced playing the guitar.
2. Practice makes perfect – If you’ve never heard the saying “Practice Makes Perfect”, you have now. This fits learning how to play the guitar as well as anything. Without practice you can’t expect to be any good. If there is a secret to playing well and learning in the quickest time possible, it is constant and consistent practice.
The fact that practicing is a requirement to become a skilled guitar player is not a surprise to most, but what is the best way to practice? When designing you practice schedule you should plan to play every day for at least 30 minutes. This works a lot better than practicing only one or two days a week for a few hours. Although the total time may be the same you will advance at a much quicker pace when playing every day. It makes it easier to make gradual improvements on what you learned the day before, without a lot of time in between to forget things.
3. At first it will hurt – It’s unfortunate, but learning how to play the guitar is painful until you build up calluses on your finger tips. The good thing is it doesn’t take too long, especially if you follow the constant and consistent practice guidelines from tip 2. Once you do, playing will be painless. The important thing to remember is to push through the pain.

There are many people who wish they knew how to play an instrument, such as the guitar. Fortunately, it is possible to learn guitar without reading music. You can even master the instrument without learning to read a single note.
The guitar and other similar instruments, such as the bass, have their own form of written music, which is referred to as tablature. Tablature is very easy to learn and read because it does not involve strange or unfamiliar symbols, which is the case with learning to read music.
When you read tablature, or tab for short, you will see a series of numbers and lines. The lines are arranged vertically and each one represents a string on the guitar. The line at the bottom will relate to the top string of your guitar, while the line at the top will relate to the bottom string of your guitar.
The numbers you see when reading tablature relate to the frets on the guitar, which makes it very easy to understand. You do not have to worry about reading odd looking symbols or note names. You just need to move your fingers to the correct fret, which is given to you right in the tablature.

If you feel you need to give your guitar skills a boost and make some forward progress in how you teach yourself guitar then the Jamorama system could suit you.
To provide the reader with a gauge of my ability, I had attended over two dozen lessons over the years, been mentored by friends who are quite good guitarists and read numerous books to try and improve my skills which had seemed to plateau at an intermediate level.
The guitar tuition progress was limited to the 30/60 minute class and how much effective practice I could do during the week after getting maybe 2/3 key takeaways from a class. Learning guitar online seemed to be the ideal approach. After assessing reviews of several online products I chose to go with Jamorama.
The product’s learning method incorporates video lessons, eBooks and jam tracks. There is a natural progression through the lessons to build up the player from an absolute beginner to advanced level meaning I could skip over the simpler lessons and focus in on the more complex sections.

Jamorama also introduced me to music theory concepts (chord progressions, etc.) which I had not fully grasped previously. This was an eye-opener for me as I have now come to understand the progressions used in most modern songs follow some very simple templates. This knowledge makes it easy to then play by ear with any tune once you have worked out the root chord that is used.
In conclusion, I’ve been happy with the progressive improvements that Jamorama provides through its logical sequence of lessons. The interactive video media suits my learning style (replaying techniques or sections of lessons repeatedly) and the jam tracks have solidified the new knowledge in a simulated band setting. The bonus of learning some music theory has given me the confidence to understand popular tunes song structure and now forms a key tool in my own songwriting tool-kit.
