3. At first it will hurt – It’s unfortunate, but learning how to play the guitar is painful until you build up calluses on your finger tips. The good thing is it doesn’t take too long, especially if you follow the constant and consistent practice guidelines from tip 2. Once you do, playing will be painless. The important thing to remember is to push through the pain.
4. Different learning options – There are more choices than ever on the ways to learn how to play the guitar. The internet and streaming video make it easy for someone to “take lessons” right from their computer in the comfort of their home. While that works for some people other prefer the traditional method of learning from an instructor. You have to figure out the best way that works for you, and remember that one way may be better at one stage of you development and a different one might be better later on. Explore the different options and find one that is right for you at your present stage.

Most guitarists, even famous ones, learn to play guitar without being able to read music. It’s a necessity to learn the simple principles of guitar, such as chord structure and simple scales, such as the pentatonic (referred to as the blues scale) but it is possible to attain a good standard of guitar playing without going through the process of learning to read music.
Many people believe that by removing the constraints of sight reading music allows a guitarist to flourish more becoming more original in their playing and performance. Another great way to learn to play without sight reading is to dive straight in there, learn a few chords and begin just writing your own songs. You can either try and paraphrase a song that you already like or just switch your brain off for a few seconds, clear your mind and go for something original! The chances are though that you will have drawn influence from somewhere.

OK so you’ve written a catchy little tune or riff and now you want to turn that into a great song right? You’ve maybe even come up with a melody for a singing line for the verse or chorus and it’s coming together nicely:) So, you grab your pen and a pad, snap open a beer or glass of wine (coz that always helps) and you’re ready to knock out some great lyrics and you’re thinking to yourself, THIS IS THE EASY PART. All I need is something to write about and I’ll be underway. A little bit of pen chewing follows with a little bit of staring blankly into space…how long can this take? 10 minutes, half hour…come on, an hour at tops!
So the next drink goes down, the pen gets another chew, more staring into space and still nothing to show. “OK, maybe I’m just not in lyric mode today after all” you think to yourself. “I’ll try again tomorrow.” We’ve all been there and this is generally what’s known as writers block. I once went a whole 2 week vacation with writers block. Got through plenty of coffee in those couple of weeks:)
I do honestly believe that, just as some of us are visual and artistic, others do have a God given talent for writing lyrics and it will always come easy for some people. In fact a fellow songwriting friend of mine does actually make me sick at how easily he can write lyrics but what I also believe is that like anything we turn our minds to…practice makes perfect and the more you practice lyric writing the more understanding you get and the easier it becomes. Trust me on that!
Here are some easy ways to get around writers block:
*It’s important to give a simple message and try to write lyrics that people can identify with.* *cliches should be avoided or rewritten into your own words* *Although certain lines should rhyme they shouldn’t be forced as this could affect the singability of the song* *writing a story in the past tense is the easiest method so you could write about something that has already happened* *Writing about a present day theme is also a good thing to work on. Consider writing about something that is happening to you, a friend or a family member right now* *writing a song about a future happening is also a popular technique. Perhaps if you won money, or if your partner had an affair with a friend. Write about how this might affect your life*

I’ve found that writing the basic idea for a song on my acoustic guitar is a much more successful way to song write no matter what type of music you are into. It makes sense to me that if a song can sound good when just played at a basic, no frills level like this then it’s certainly going to work in a full band situation complete with drums, as and maybe keyboard. When played on acoustic guitar then it’s also much easier to set a rhythm, tempo, chord structure and melody. So try it and see how you get on. You’ll be surprised at the cool things you can come up with.
And when you think about it, how many classic songs have you heard played in this stripped down manner? Just about every great song will have one version broken down to just a guy or gal and their acoustic and I love to hear a song played in this way. It really sorts the wheat from the chaff in my opinion and is a great way to begin building your songs.
Now, the next thing may sound like a contradiction, but don’t necessarily think that less chords will make writing a song easier. Believe it or not I recently wrote a song with just 2 chords, (B & Cm) and it was possibly the most difficult song I’ve ever written. The main reason being that you have to add interest to the song in an alternative way to chord sound. This can be done by a change of rhythm, tempo or accentuation but it really is quite a challenge. A great thing to have a go at though.
But as a beginner I’d recommend songwriting with 3 chords. It’s much easier and many great songs contain 3 chords. The chords do need to work well together though although you’ll be surprised at what chords you can actually use. Simple chord sequences such as D, A and E or D, C, G have been used in some all time classics as long as they are held together with a strong melody and lyric.
A method you can also use with 3 chord structures is what is called a ‘turnaround’. This is where you effectively change a 3 chord sequence into a 4 chord structure e.g. E, A, D, A. This again is frequently used by major artists…remember ‘Wild Thing’ by The Troggs?
A really neat thing I do often is adding a false bass note to change the sound of a chord. This can be really effective and also give a professional touch. Artists such as Neil Young and Pink Floyd and Kings Of Leon use this technique. If you listen to ‘Use Somebody’ an E bass note is use on top of a C major. Great sound!
