You should have a good axe if you want to became a good guitar player. Now it doesn’t have to be a 1960’s Les Paul or something fancy like that but it needs to fulfill a few simple requirements.

This is what you need to do. Buy the best instrument you can afford and start learning. Here are some advantages of buying a good guitar.
You are going to have to spend loads of time with it so you might as well get something that feels and sounds good. The last thing you want to do is to struggle to get a nice sound out of the guitar. That will make you loose your passion and make you give up and you don’t want that I presume.
When the time comes to upgrade your guitar, be aware of it, your axe will have better resale value and you’ll have a good deposit for the new guitar.

Learning a skill these days is becoming easier every day. There is so much info available out there in books, magazines and DVDs that has become very easy to teach yourself guitar or anything else for that matter without the need of a mentor. All you need is determination and a good practice regime to follow.
When committing to a program you want to set yourself achievable goals and a practice routine. To practice a little bit each day – or at least 5 days a weeks – it’s better than a lot every once in a while. This is what I call “the principle of under achieving” and it’s very important because you don’t want to burn out before you get anywhere.
You must be realistic with your practice and don’t over do it unless you really have the time for it. Half an hour per day is probably good enough for most of you and it’s definitely a good start. During you practice work on your guitar tutorial exercises and don’t waster your time on jamming too much.
Your practice time is precious! The less time you have for your practice the less time you have to waste, therefore make sure you practise the right exercises that gets results ASAP.
Your first goal when you teach yourself guitar is to learn a few open chords, a few rhythms and with that you can start practicing easy guitar songs. The trick is to make the song flow by keeping the beat and off you go.

One of the keys to great and enjoyable guitar play is your ability to master the chords. Learning to cleanly combine your single notes into fabulous chords will make your guitar come alive with newfound potential.
All the practice time you have spent perfecting your single notes will now make sense. The transition from single note play to chords opens the doors to many of today’s popular songs as well as allows the guitarist to create their own combinations. Here are a few suggestions to mastering the chords.
Keep it simple
Learning to play the chords is a natural progression. The transition can seem laborious but with your ability to play singles notes well, you will be able to master simple chords by combining your notes.
To begin working with chords, work with the easy single notes first. Familiarize yourself with G to A, E to A, or D to G. Perfecting those movements is a big step in the right direction. The guitar tutorial will walk you through other combinations that can be easily practiced and yield big returns on your overall experience.
Stay positive
Although these chords are relatively simple, it may take some time to fully grasp the movements. Guitarists always struggle in the beginning. Let’s face it, guitar can be an easy and intuitive instrument to learn at beginner level, and over the years I have seen many students get amazing results reasonably fast when following proper directions.
On the guitar we have the CAGED system that allows us to use five open chord shapes – C, A, G, E, and D – to get all the other chords. We are dealing with chords and scales shapes and not notes per se. As a matter of fact many guitar players are not aware of which notes they are pressing, all they need – and want – to know is where to put that specific shape.
These are the most important shapes you need to know if you want to learn guitar chords:
“Open Chords” are where every aspiring guitar player starts because of their simplicity. They are made of both open strings and pressed notes and their distinctive sound makes them extremely popular in many genres of music. They are often played close to the neck of the guitar but there are also more advanced shapes you can play all over the fretboard.
“Barre’ Chords” are movable versions of some open chords. You use your index to press a few strings on the same fret then you add the open chord shape using the other fingers. The E & A shapes are most commonly used to get barre’ chords although you can apply this technique to the all CAGED system. Barre’ chords can be a little bit more demanding to play but are extremely important as they allow you to play in all the keys including sharps and flats.
“Power Chords” are probably the easiest chords ever as they only have one shape for both 5th & 6th string root. You could have a few variations of course but the basic power chord shape is that simple. They can successfully be used on acoustic guitar but it’s on distorted electric guitar that they really sound the best. Power chords have been used in almost any style to craft some of the most memorable riffs in the history of modern music.
