What Guitar Effects Pedals Are Trying To Achieve

Saturday, August 21st, 2010

A guitar and an amp does not produce quite the sound that most guitarist’s are looking for. However, with the added effects provided by effects pedals in the form of distortion, delay and chorus, they can generate the right sound for them. Multi effects pedals offer a variety of sounds and there is always the option of a dedicated guitar effects pedal. Let’s look at these main effects in more detail.

Distortion

Distortion is the daddy of effects. It is, in fact, the sound synonymous with that of an electric guitar. The type and level of this effect required depends upon the genre it is being applied to. Metal needs a crunchy sound whilst blues requires a warmer sound. With country, it its use is limited as they’re just using enough to create a clean sound.

Delay

Delay is another popular effect, related to reverb. An analogy of a delay could be the sound of the room that you’re in. A large room creates a boomy sound and a small room, more distinct and brighter. In any room, you’ll hear the original sound followed by the sound that reflects off the walls. The sound actually indicates the size of the room. It is essentially similar to reverb but the sounds aren’t as distinct.

Chorus

The function of this effect is to split the sound as well as adding a delay, albeit a slight one, to one of the signals. When two guitarists are performing simultaneously, there will uniformly be one slightly out of synch with the other. The chorus recreates that sound so effectively you’re hearing the sound of a chorus. It gives the effect of two guitarist’s performing resulting in a thicker sound.

The sound that you hear when you hear the tones of an electric guitar will at some point make use of at least one of these effects. Rock and heavy metal are synonymous with this sound. These effects can be used to create a sound all of their own and inspire the next generation of guitarists as has happened ever since these effects came into being.

Effects Pedals: Providing The Sound

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

Effects pedals revolutionised the sound of the electric guitar in the 1960s. Roger Meyer was the creator of the original effects pedals known today as overdrive and distortion. Also the creator of the “wah-wah” pedal, fans of his creations have included Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. They continue to be a mainstay in popular music today.

Effects pedals give more tonal colours to the guitarist. These tonal colours can also be created by using the amplifier’s settings. However, the amplifier is limited in terms of the effects it can provide. Also, the settings of the amp can only be modified between songs which is not ideal for a guitarist who wouldn’t be allowed to change tone and colour during a song. Also, Effects pedals give the guitarist a diverse range of expressions at his disposal.

Effects pedals today are also used with acoustic and classical guitars. They aren’t used as widely of course and certainly, the volume and distortion pedals are not used with these instruments. Pedals that are more widely used with an acoustic guitar are rack mounted effects. Although they are popular, they are more suited for the advanced guitarist as they for one, are more costly and also require a high level of sophistication. They are triggered by pedals and as such are considered by many to be something of a luxury.

Switching an effect on or off only requires the guitarist to stomp a box right in front of them. The wah-wah pedal, however, works a little bit differently. For example, the distortion tone which metal and hard rock guitar players will be all too familiar with can be instantly switched off. Just one stomp will give life back to the distorted sound.

Making the adjustments needed on a guitar and the amp isn’t easy. And neither is adjusting the pedal’s configuration effects. However, it is necessary to create the sound that the guitarist is looking for.

Boss Effects Pedals – Still Number One

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

The practice of adding sound effects to the traditional sound of the guitar had been around for many years. When you see a guitar player stomping on foot pedals, they’re trying to create a sound that a guitar alone can not. Boss effects pedals have been the number one choice for professional guitar players for over 35 years now. Founded in 1973, they have provided a number of add-ons for guitar players and Boss effects pedals have been right up there.

The first Boss effects pedal made its appearance in 1976. It was the CE-1 Chorus and came with an AC adapter. It was the effects pedal all guitarists were clamouring for and Boss became synonymous with any new sound borne from that era. When sound underwent its next big change, in the 1980s, it saw the introduction of the flanger pedal which was later followed up by the delay pedal. Boss effects pedals have built themselves a huge reputation throughout the world and professional guitarists everywhere are using their products.

Their most popular sellers are their distortion and overdrive. Their popularity is attributed to their versatility. Boss is considered to be largely responsible for the sound of heavy metal and any heard rock or metal musician is likely to have a Boss pedal within stomping distance.

There have been numerous guitarists who have tried out other effects pedals only ultimately to return to Boss. Their ability to produce such a distinct sound lifts them over and above their competition time and again. The ability to experiment with sounds makes them popular among young musicians trying to find their sound and experienced guitarists in search of a new one.

Bright colours and sturdy design are the hallmarks of Boss effects pedals. There is bound to be a colour to match your guitar and their build can withstand a heavy touring schedule and the pounding afflicted by heavy stomping. Their newer designs have remained faithful to that of their old designs so whenever a guitar player purchases a new effects pedal from Boss, there’s a familiar look to match that familiar feel and quality.

Guitar Maintenance

Monday, August 9th, 2010

Guitarists adopt different ways of tuning. The results of the simplest ways of tuning are slightly different to each other. Beginners should follow the way of tuning that is comfortable to him. Experts adopt the right method of tuning following the pitch of the tune it sounds.

The standard tuning method is followed to tune a guitar. The strings are numbered simultaneously. The strings are numbered from the lowest to the highest string. The thinnest string is the first string that sounds high and the sixth thickest string corresponds to the lowest pitch. The standard tuning is E-A-D-G-B-E. So the sixth string corresponds to the lower E, fifth string-A, fourth string-D, third string-G, second-B and first-High E.

Pitch pipes are inexpensive and easy to use. Pitch pipes can set the right pitch for every string by making the sound of both strings equal. Electronic tuner is very costly but it can set the right tuning. It is better than pitch pipes. Electronic keyboard or piano sounds high and accurate and so they are used for tuning your guitar. Individual tuning fork is used to tune different strings. It is inexpensive and easy to carry. Harmonics is the method of tuning which is hard to use but it brings a clearer and resonating sound.

The easiest method of tuning without the help of electronic tuner is called Basic Tuning. At first, place the finger on the fifth frets of the sixth string and play both the strings simultaneously so that the notes of the two strings sound similar. If the notes of the two strings sound different then adjust the tuning peg for the fifth string and play open to match it with the fifth fretted sixth string. You have to do the same thing with the third and fourth string. Place the finger on the fourth fret of the fifth string for adjusting the tuning of second string. Then play the fifth fret of the second string to adjust the final tuning. A used Ibanez acoustic is the guitar of a new package arranged for the new guitarist.

You have to tune your guitar frequently to check your guitar from going out of tune.

Qualities Of An Electric Guitar

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

A guitar is one of the most valuable instrument a human being can play and treasure. It is easy to bring along and very simple to learn. One can make the most when playing the guitar, form plucking to strumming and to solos it can be done. It is also easy to improve with its part when customizing.

The topmost character of a guitar is the unique aspect of customizing it to another level. People have tried to go to shops and have their guitar customized to the tone they desire. Others prefer a more clearly high sound while some like their guitar to have a round and flat bass sound just by few adjustments and upgrades.

For the purpose of tone quality there are many things to consider but there are only two that is a primary concern. The body is very important and the type of wood being used in it plays a major role. The type pick up used is also what makes the guitar unique in its sound. A proper combination and few adjustments will improve how your guitar sounds.

These are the types of wood used in the body of an electric guitar: Basswood, Alder, Spruce, Swamp Ash, Mahogany, Walnut, Koa, Korina, Soft or Hard Maple, Lacewood, and Rosewood. These wood types have distinct characteristic of their own. They bring a different flavor when it comes to tone quality. It gives sufficient resonance to the guitar to sound at its best.

Some are very articulate when it comes to sounds. Some like Mahogany, Spruce and Alder for less midrange. For bass sound try out the popular basswood and if you want a little more midrange; Walnut, Lacewood , Korina and Koa is suggested. The best for a high sound tone is Swamp Ash, Maple and Rosewood.

Second aspect is the type of pick up being used, whether a single coil which is bright and high tone in sound or a humbucker which is warm and more on bass tone, the guitar player has the choice to what best sounding in his ear. Magnets of Alnico or Ceramic are used in pick ups to create a dynamic feel and attack.

These are the basis of a great sounding electric guitar. Be sure to listen to other famous guitar players and try to see what tone best suits your choice. Enjoy and have fun playing your guitar!

4 Mistakes People Make When Learning The Guitar

Sunday, June 20th, 2010

Learning how to play the guitar is really not as easy as most people believe. You must learn basic theory, plenty of chords that can be quite tricky to master, and even how to move between chords quick enough to put a song together. However, once you begin to get the hang of these basics, you will know all of your hard work was well worth the effort. You will be able to play your favorite songs any time you want without even thinking about it. Learning will be even quicker if you can avoid making the following four common beginner mistakes:

Going Too Fast: Sorry, this may seem boring, but it is very important that you do not rush through the basics just to get to the good songs and chords. You will end up paying in the long run. Unfortunately, you have to go through a certain amount of “boring” stuff before you can move on. Skimming through it is only going to cause problems in your progress later. Learn your scales, major and minor, learn your notes, and do not rely too much on guitar tablature. You should even give finger picking a try. Practice and memorize as much as you can; this will help you get to the good stuff faster.

Getting Caught Out By Barre Chords: Barre chords are the nemesis of most beginners, and it took me months to get the hang of them. These are the chords where one finger has to lie across a lot of different strings, and they are a real pain to start with! A lot of people give up when they reach this point, they can’t get the hang of them and they either obsess about them and don’t learn anything else, or get frustrated and stop completely.

Instead you should practice them every day, but also continue learning other things at the same time, give half your practice session to barres and half to other stuff. That will stop you getting frustrated and when you do eventually get the hang of them, then you will have a load of new skills from your other practice too.

Not Paying Attention To Rhythm: Using a metronome does not seem cool, but it is a great way to learn how to stick to a rhythm. A lot of beginners just play a song the way they think it should sound, while paying no attention to the actual rhythm. If you plan to play with a band, or with musical tracks this can pose a real problem. You may find yourself speeding up through the chorus or that you are just playing too fast overall.

Sloppy Practice: Don’t let your practice sessions get sloppy, aim for quality every time and you will progress a lot faster. Don’t try to play too fast and ignore it when you make some mistakes, instead concentrate and make sure every note and chord is perfect before you speed things up. If you do allow your practice to get sloppy then it will show through in your playing.

4 Tips For Budding Piano Players

Friday, June 11th, 2010

One of the most beautiful instruments there is, the piano, requires a great deal of dedication to learn as it can be quite complicated. If you want to learn to play it well, you need to be prepared to put a lot of work into the process. You will not only need to learn how to play the actual notes, and the physical techniques, you will also need to learn the structure of music. Here are some tips to help:

Select a Teacher You Get On Well With: This tip may seem a bit silly, but you are going to be learning from this person, so you must like him or her. Establishing a good relationship with your instructor will cause you to enjoy your lesson time, which will lead to you working hard to please your teacher. The end result is that you will keep taking the lessons and enjoy the process.

Compare this principle to working with a teacher that you hate; one who scolds you for every little mistake or one that seems to hate being there with you. You will not be in a good mindset for learning because you will be nervous, anxious, sad, and angry. You will not be able to perform the tasks that need to be completed (or you will do so out of fear), and you will find countless excuses to skip lessons or quit altogether. Now can you see how important a good working relationship is with your teacher?

Practice: Again, this may seem obvious; however plenty of people simply forget to do it. Between every lesson you should be physically practicing. If you do not have an actual piano, get a portable keyboard to practice on. You should also work at memorizing notes, scales, and other exercises. Try to find at least fifteen minutes every day to practice. This really adds up and can help a great deal.

Buy a Metronome: While learning how to play the notes is important, it is not enough. You need to learn how to correctly play along with a rhythm. One great way to do this is to play along with a metronome. A metronome ticks away as you play, which keeps you from speeding up or slowing down in tricky areas, and it keeps you playing at the proper pace throughout the song. If you want to become the best piano player possible, you will most definitely need to use a metronome.

Results Take Time: This tip is often the hardest to accept, however you cannot expect to become a piano legend overnight. Learning to play will take months, and even years. You should not give up or become frustrated when the process seems slow, or you are only learning basic songs and theory. All of the world?s best piano players started off the same way, so keep at it!
